The zombie love story (also called the zombie couple trend, the AI zombie trend or the AI zombie hug) is a 10 to 15 second AI-generated short film that went viral on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts in October 2026. One partner has turned into a zombie. The other aims a gun with shaking hands, can't pull the trigger, drops it and opens their arms. As the zombie lunges, a hard match cut lands the same embrace in a golden-hour wheat field: a memory of the two of them before everything ended.
The first remakes appeared in late September 2026. Creators fed two reference photos of a real couple into AI video models such as ByteDance's Seedance (through Dreamina and CapCut), Kling and Google Veo, which by then could keep two real faces recognizable through a multi-shot film. The usual caption, "Would you still love me if I were a zombie?", riffs on the 2021 TikTok couples' question "Would you still love me if I was a worm?". There is no official app, filter or song. Early versions reused the original clip's slow piano, and many creators now time a sad or romantic sound to the cut.
It works because it packs a whole film into 15 seconds: a cold, blue-grey first half with danger and an impossible choice, then a warm ending without blood or gore. Couples post it for anniversaries and Halloween, and the format has spread to friends, siblings, parents and pets. Here you can make your own version with sound from two photos, no editing needed.
The trend has no single known creator. Dates come from early posts and tutorials on TikTok; play counts are as reported by creators.

"Would you still love me if I was a worm?"
A playful couples' question goes viral on TikTok. Years later, the zombie trend borrows its line as its caption.
The first AI zombie short films
Creators turn two photos of a real couple into a cinematic clip: a dim kitchen, a gun that never fires, an embrace, a cut to a wheat field.
It breaks out ahead of Halloween
#zombieaitrend takes off. CapCut templates such as "My Beloved Zombie" and step-by-step tutorials rack up millions of plays.
It goes global
Versions appear in Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Indonesian ("tren jadi zombie"), with friends, siblings, parents and pets in place of couples.
